Public Works

The City of Newport Public Works Department maintains the City’s 1.1 square miles of streets, and water and sewer services for its citizens and visitors.

🚧 ROAD IMPROVEMENTS ARE ONGOING 🚧

The City of Newport has begun a road improvement project June 16th thanks to grant funding from the Transportation Improvement Board. This initiative aims to enhance street conditions, extend roadway lifespan, and improve overall driving safety for residents.

Project Details:

Start Date: Week of June 16, 2025

Roads scheduled for improvement: W. 7th Street, W5TH Street, W. 4th Street, W. 3rd Street, W. 2nd Street, N. Warren Ave, S. Scott Ave, Portions of Spruce St, N. Fea Ave and Pine St, and  N. Calispel Ave

The project will follow a multi-step chip sealing process to ensure long-lasting results:

Surface Preparation – Roads will be grinded, patched, and graded.

Application & Curing – A liquid asphalt base will be applied and allowed to set.

Crushed Stone Spreading & Compaction – Stone will be distributed using specialized equipment, followed by compaction (including driving on it for best results).

Sweepings – Multiple sweepings to remove loose gravel.

Road work progress is subject to weather conditions, equipment availability, and urgent infrastructure repairs that may require reallocation of city resources.

Drivers are urged to use caution in construction zones and adhere to posted speed limits to minimize vehicle damage and ensure worker safety. The City appreciates residents’ patience during this process, which will result in smoother and more durable roads for years to come.

A Small Works Roster has been established for the purpose of notifying qualified contractors of pending Public Works projects and may be utilized whenever the City of Newport seeks to construct any project when the estimated cost is less than $350,000 for non-federally funded or $250,000 for federally funded projects. City of Newport small works application.
