The City of Newport Washington is now requiring business Licenses for businesses functioning within City Limits. This will be an endorsement added to your state business license and will be renewed yearly. The cost for the business license is $25 total and will be required for businesses that also operate out of a home. You will add this endorsement through the Department of Revenue, follow the link HERE for instructions.
What is considered doing business in Newport?
The term engaging in business means commencing, conducting, or continuing in business, and also the exercise of corporate or franchise powers, as well as liquidating a business went the liquidators thereof hold themselves out to the public as conducting such business. This would include owning, renting, leasing, maintaining, or having the right to use personal, intangible, or real property located in the City. Soliciting sales, making repairs, providing maintenance, providing technical services, installing, constructing, collecting on accounts, or picking up personal property, solid waste, construction debris, or tangible personal property.
Exemptions:
The license and license fee provisions of this chapter do not apply to a governmental entity including public and private elementary schools, a person who is delivering newspapers or periodicals (this does not qualify those producing newspapers), a personal soliciting orders from retail establishments for the delivery and sale of goods, a person or organization conducting a nonprofit enterprise, a person under the age of 18 engaging in business, a person selling his/her own produce, or a person engaging in the casual sale of items of personal property where the person conducting the such sale is not regularly engaging in the business of selling items (examples: garage sales, bake sales).
